Center Members are Fortune's "Best Companies to Work For"

February 2008

With corporate citizenship increasingly being seen as an important factor in attracting and retaining employees, we're not surprised to see that more than one-quarter of the companies named to Fortune magazine's list of the "100 Best Companies to Work For" in America are Center members.

This year's list included 26 Center members:

  • Adobe Systems
  • Alcon Laboratories
  • American Century Investments
  • Booz Allen Hamilton
  • Bright Horizons Family Solutions
  • CH2M HILL
  • Cisco Systems
  • Deloitte & Touche USA
  • Erickson Retirement Communities
  • Ernst & Young
  • FedEx
  • Genentech
  • General Mills
  • Goldman Sachs
  • JM Family Enterprises
  • KPMG
  • Marriott International
  • Mattel
  • Microsoft
  • Network Appliance
  • Nike
  • Nordstrom
  • Recreational Equipment (REI)
  • Starbucks
  • Texas Instruments
  • Umpqua Bank

The "100 Best Companies to Work For" list is compiled for Fortune by the Great Place to Work Institute in San Francisco. It is based on opinions of the company's employees and an evaluation of the policies and culture of each company.

Most of a company's score (two-thirds) is based on the results of a 57-question employee survey, which is sent to a minimum of 400 randomly selected employees from each company. Employees are asked about such issues as attitudes about management's credibility, job satisfaction and workplace camaraderie.

The Institute's web site includes quotes from employees at some of the companies named to the list. We especially liked this one:

"I spent most of my career in a company which focused on efficiency and profits - employees were a 'means to the end.' However, I have had the fortunate opportunity to join this company late in my career. This is truly a place that puts people first, manages from the heart, and cares for the community."

The complete list and story appeared in the Feb. 4 issue of Fortune, and is available online at www.fortune.com.
