Untapped Assets: Mobilizing Retirees for Civic Engagement

As a partner in ground breaking research involving the role of retirees in civic engagement, The Center is exploring the attitudes of workers, company executives and retirees regarding volunteerism. The research involves interviews with more than 1,000 people associated with 20 leading companies in the United States.

With life expectancy in the U.S. at a historic high, the 76 million baby boomers who will reach retirement age within the next 15 years can anticipate another 20 to 30 years of activity after retirement. The research will examine the attitudes toward volunteerism of 1,000 workers – both retired and active – through focus groups and survey research. Executives within the 20 companies will also be interviewed to allow for an understanding of the scope of corporate practices and attitudes regarding volunteerism and the role of employees and retirees.

The research is part of a three-year project led by Volunteers of America and funded by The Atlantic Philanthropies. The University of Maryland’s Center on Aging is also a partner in the project.

Findings of this research are expected to be released in 2005.
