A new magazine, The Corporate Citizen, has been published by the Boston College Center for Corporate Citizenship to provide business leaders, policymakers, academics and others with the latest thinking — and doing — in the field of corporate responsibility.
The publication reflects much of the content from The Center’s annual conference and the practices of many of its 350-member companies. It also recognizes the companies that support the conference, through sponsorship and the content workshops, and ultimately presents the contemporary challenges and opportunities in corporate citizenship.
With a controlled print circulation of 50,000 and its on-line availability, the magazine is the most widely circulated publication devoted to the practice of corporate citizenship.
The Corporate Citizen 2006 offers profiles of how companies such as Chiquita, Starbucks and Nokia are addressing social issues through responsible business practices that have led to significant business opportunities. It also gives voice to our 2006 keynote speakers: IBM’s Nick Donofrio, who believes that the future is about innovation that depends on open sourcing and collaboration; Timberland CEO Jeff Swartz, who challenged companies to move from funding programs to building solutions for today’s big problems; and Greyston Bakery CEO Julius Walls, Jr., who told the inspirational story of a small company with a social mission built right into its business model.
The production of the magazine incorporated The Center’s commitment to promoting sustainability. The paper for the magazine and its cover is FSC-certified Mohawk Via Cool White, a process-chlorine-free 100% post-consumer fiber recycled paper manufactured using Green-e certified wind-generated electricity. Green-e, a program of the Center for Resource Solutions, is the nation’s leading independent certification and verification program for renewable energy and companies that use renewable energy. By choosing this recycled-fiber paper instead of virgin-fiber paper, the environmental savings realized:
- 244.15 trees preserved for the future*
- 103,708 gallons of wastewater flow saved*
- 172,937,600 BTUs energy conserved*
- 11,739 pounds of air emissions were not generated because windpower was used in the manufacture of this paper
[These savings, determined by using the Environmental Benefits Calculator on Mohawk Fine Papers’ web site, are derived from information publicly available from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Environmental Defense. Visit www.mohawkpaper.com for details.]
The paper reflects only half of the commitment to sustainability practices. The printer, Hull Printing of Barre, VT, was chosen because it is FSC-certified and can ensure the “chain-of-custody” for the entire operation. FSC standards promote environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically viable management of the world’s forests.
The inaugural magazine was produced with sponsorship from the following leadership companies, who also provided messages expressing a commitment to community and sustainability. (Click on the links below to view their messages.)
The next issue of The Corporate Citizen will be released in September 2007. For information about sponsorship, contact Peggy Connolly at 617.552.0722, or email peggy.connolly.1@bc.edu.
