Profile of the Profession 2006The 2006 Profile of the Profession is the Boston College Center's latest survey of salaries and benefits, job responsibilities, and corporate structures.

The survey reflects data collected from 748 professionals, a majority female who hold middle-management positions.

There's a new complexity to the way companies respond to the expectations of an ever-expanding array of stakeholders, which has led to the restructuring of old jobs and creation of new positions. In this report you will notice titles, responsibilities and reporting structures not present in earlier releases.

The changes in the way companies relate to the community have been so significant that many may legitimately ask what "profession" is this survey profiling? That question has no easy answer. While there was a time we considered community relations/community involvement a profession, there is a strong argument that it is really just one important piece of a company's broader corporate citizenship or corporate responsibility commitment.

The nature of this current fluidity – and ambiguity – presented The Center with a challenge in the way it assessed and measured the many dimensions of the jobs related to this work. That is why we asked respondents to self-identify the track they felt best reflected their position and why we divided the report into two equal parts that present the data for each track.

The data provided are based on responses from 748 professionals who responded to an email survey. Respondents were asked to identify themselves as either as a Community Involvement professional (66 percent) or as a Corporate Citizenship professional (34 percent).

The survey reveals that the median salary range for community involvement professionals is $70,000 to $79,999 and $90,000 to $99,999 for corporate citizenship professionals who responded. In the report, salaries are also broken down by years of service and position level. From the surveys, it appears these are still female-dominated professions: community involvement respondents splitt 77 percent female to 21 percent male; corporate citizenship professionals split 69 percent female to 33 percent male.

A majority of the respondents was mid-level executives with job titles of manager and director (57 percent of the community involvement respondents and 64 percent of corporate citizenship professionals) and reported that collectively they had 10.5 years of service with their company.

The survey shows that the function varies considerably. On the community involvement side, the most dominant term is community relations. The corporate citizenship professionals report quite a hodgepodge. Only seven percent of those respondents use the term corporate citizenship in their title and only four percent said they use corporate social responsibility. In this area, community relations is still the dominant term, although that only involves 16 percent of respondents.

As companies shift how they manage the relationship with society and begin reckoning with the impact that social and environmental issues are having on their core business, it's only logical that the nature of the work would also be changing. While there remains much uncertainty about the organizational issues, The Center believes a strong and sustainable company should adopt a three-dimensional management approach to its corporate citizenship with a focus on community engagement, responsible business practices, and social innovation in business development.

 

Survey respondents were asked to list their top three job responsibilities. For community involvement professionals the ranking was philanthropy, relationship building, and volunteerism; for corporate citizenship professionals the responsibilities were cited as communications, relationship building, and philanthropy. We also documented the tasks done on a daily basis: for corporate citizenship professionals it is program planning, administration, and development; for community involvement professionals it is philanthropy/contributions.

It is still more art than science to get a firm handle on the emerging professional field of practice that we call corporate citizenship. But it should be recognized that corporate citizenship is more than an operational function. It is a value and performance driver that should be present in every job and operation of a successful company.
