Community Involvement Leadership Academy

First of its kind learning program for experienced community involvement managers

The community involvement game is changing. A confluence of issues and developments – globalization, economic policy and changing demographics to name a few – are changing the relative roles of business, government and civil society. More is expected and required of business and, as a result, the bar for community involvement continues to rise.

As part of the Boston College Center’s 25-year commitment to elevate the efforts of community involvement managers to have meaningful impact within their companies and the community, we are pleased to introduce the Community Involvement Leadership Academy.

This innovative program will help participants apply newly acquired tools and strategies to lead change in their organizations. Designed for the most experienced community involvement managers, the Academy is composed of an intensive 4-1/2-day on-campus program followed by a companion 4-month distance learning program.

Participants who complete both parts of the Academy will earn their Certificate in Community Involvement Leadership from the Carroll School of Management.

Part 1: On-Campus Academy

Held at the Lynch Center in the heart of the Boston College Carroll School of Management, this intensive 4-1/2-day program will draw on recent Center research focused on leadership competencies for community involvement managers, as well as the practical experience of its practitioner faculty and guest speakers. The On-Campus Academy will equip participants with tools, skills and strategies to help them take their leadership and influence – as well as community involvement in their companies – to the next level. Participants will learn how to:

  • Understand power, influence and leadership, and how to draw on and develop confidence, credibility and authority
  • Understand and lead change to develop a meaningful and lasting organization-wide commitment to social engagement
  • Create and leverage value-focused stakeholder relationships
  • Work together with the best minds inside and outside the company to co-create impactful social innovation programs that get at the root causes of challenging social issues
  • Align and integrate the company’s social engagement strategy with other corporate citizenship initiatives to heighten its impact

The program will be highly interactive. Instructional methodologies will include lectures by faculty and guest speakers, conversations with leading practitioners, group work, role play and action learning.

Part 2: Off-Campus Academy

Graduates of the On-Campus Community Involvement Leadership Academy who want to earn their Certificate in Community Involvement Leadership from the Boston College Carroll School of Management must enroll in and complete the Off-Campus Academy, a 4-month distance learning program focused on the real-world application of new skills and strategies. The Off-Campus Academy will provide participants continued faculty and peer input and support as they act to take community involvement to the next level within their company.

The program features:

  • Individualized coaching from Center faculty – While implementing change and experimenting with new practice, managers and leaders often need to talk to someone in confidence. Participants will receive regular coaching (2 hours per month), from Academy faculty.
  • Action learning with other program participants – Off-Campus participants will be assigned to 4-to-5 person Action Learning Teams that will convene via phone with Center faculty three times in four months to review progress and receive additional direct peer and expert counsel that accelerates learning and enhances its application.
  • Ongoing supportive networking with other program participants – Leveraging the Center’s online Member Community, Off-Campus participants will network with fellow community involvement leaders who understand the issues they face on a day-to-day basis.
  • Demonstration of leadership and change in action – Following an easy to use model, participants will develop their case example of community involvement leadership and change in action, effectively recording their application of new learning and the exploration and outcome of new approaches.
  • A one-day leaders summit – In a one-day reconvening at the Center’s annual International Corporate Citizenship Conference in Minneapolis, April 10, 2011, participants will share and talk through their experiences trying to effect change and receive a final round of expert and peer feedback.
  • Complimentary registration for the Conference – Participants will be invited to attend as guests of honor with the registration fee waived (an approximate $1,500 savings). Participants with particularly compelling change stories may be invited to participate in a breakout session focused on Leading Community Involvement Change.
